Coleophora paludoides

McDunnough, 1957

Sort #: 677 | P3 #: 421562 | MPG #: 1304
| View on iNaturalist | BOLD Link

Larval feeding type: Leaf feeder, in a spatulate leaf case with a lateral part of the leaf curled over the top of the main section
Larval substrate: Morella caroliniensis (Small Bayberry), Comptonia peregrina* (Sweet Fern), also Gaylussacia (Huckleberry), Malus sieboldii* (Toringo Crab Apple)

Comment: A case was found on apple (probably Malus sieboldii) on Plum Island. This could be C. paludoides or the European counterpart C. siccifolia, which feeds on apple, hawthorn and birch and is reported to have a 2-year life-cycle. They may also be synonymous (also the European Vaccinium-feeder C. uliginosellus) as DNA cannot separate them.

Status in MA (automated assessment): Restricted distribution, rare
Status in N. America: Native
MA Endangered Species Act status: None
First Year Reported: 2019
Last Year Reported: 2021

Distribution by County: Franklin, Essex
Number of Records: 2
