Coleophora cf paludoides

Sort #: 1251.1 | P #: 591610.2 | MPG #: 1304.1
| BOLD Link

Larval feeding type: Leaf feeder, in a spatulate leaf case with a lateral part of the leaf curled over the top of the main section
Larval substrate: Malus sieboldii* (Toringo Crab Apple), Amelanchier* (Serviceberry), Aronia melanocarpa* (Black Chokeberry)

Comment: A larva found feeding on Malus sieboldii was DNA barcoded and found to be 2.5% different to typical C. paludoides feeding on Morella/Comptonia (McDunnough type series). It is likely therefore that this represents a different species (but more data required). This was unexpected, as typical C. paludoides falls within the same DNA BIN as the European C. siccifolia, which feeds on Malus and Crataegus. At this time, all observations of C. paludoides feeding on Rosaceae are placed here, although more research is needed to confirm this.
