Sort #: 22 | P3 #: 160020 | MPG #: 92
View on BugGuide | View on iNaturalist | BOLD Link

Larval feeding type: leaf-miner; larva pale yellow often appearing whitish or colorless in the mine; linear mine about 1mm wide, hardly wider than the larva, typically with a broad central frass line
Larval substrate: Corylus cornuta* (Beaked Hazel), Carpinus (Ironwood), Ostrya virginiana (Hop Hornbeam), Betula lenta* (Black Birch), Physocarpus, Amelanchier, Vaccinium*, Gaylussacia*, Myrica gale (Sweetgale), Morella caroliniensis* (Small Bayberry), Comptonia peregrina (Sweet Fern), Hamamelis (Witch Hazel), Lyonia ligustrina* (Maleberry), Rhododendron viscosum* (Clammy Azalea), Alnus serrulata* (Smooth Alder)
Phenology: Adult: 5/23 (1 record)

Comment: One of the few Stigmella species which can feed on several different plant families. Very closely related to S. betulicola and Betula is one of its many host plants; Ostrya is another hostplant and on that plant it could be confused with the S. microtheriella (long and very narrow mine, not wider than the larva, often following veins) and S. ostryaefoliella (mine about 2mm wide at end).
