Larval feeding type: Initially a leaf miner, then forms extensive galleries in the larger branches
Larval substrate: Baccharis halimifolia (Eastern False Willow)
Phenology: Adult: 8/13 (1 record)
Comment: H. balanotes, H. kellicottii, H. lacteodactylus and H. glenni form a group of very similar species, which need genitalia dissection to distinguish. The ground color of these species is brownish-white, sometimes paler (appearing white), sometimes darker. In photos they can look pure white and can then be mistaken for one of the H. homodactyla complex. H. balanotes is restricted to coastal areas where the hostplant grows. Small specimens (WS<21mm) are likely to be H. kellicottii.
