Larval substrate: Grasses and cereal grains, incl. Zea mays (Corn)
Phenology: Adult: 5/05 to 11/07 (366 records)
Comment: Two to three generations per year; not always easy to distinguish from C. leachellus and is often misidentified. The white stripe on praefectellus is somewhat thinner and towards the base is about as wide as the brown along the costa. The black subterminal spots are on a white background, whereas in praefectellus they tend to be on silver. The apical dash is usually the same color as the ground color, whereas in leachellus it is usually the much darker. In praefectellus the full length of the fringe is whitish at the base, whereas in leachellus it is restricted to the apical part.
