Larval feeding type: Bark miner, a gallery several inches long in the lowest layer, against the cambium. It is not visible on the surface until much later, after the larva has left the mine, when the bark swells over the mine making a conspicuous wound (Ruggles, 1913).
Larval substrate: Castanea dentata* (American Chestnut)

Comment: The original description refers to an illustratuion of a putative mine from Barre, MA (Rane, 1912). The larva is full-grown in May and the moth emerges in September. Head is pale orange to buff, collar brown.
